A determined effort to improve U.S.-#Israel ties is needed, writes Institute expert David Makovsky. When both countries' policies are understood to be in sync, there is a ripple effect across the region that bolsters the deterrence factors of both countries. Indeed, when they iron out their issues, they will emerge stronger for it. #middleeast #mideast #gaza #rafah #palestinians #policy #foreignpolicy #defense #iran

Recently, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs substantially altered the #Gaza death toll it relays from #Palestinian sources. A UN spokesman attributed these changes to routine revisions and the "fog of war." While accurately counting the dead in a conflict is a challenge, the agency should be exceedingly careful when making claims about the death toll, writes Gabriel Epstein. #middleeast #mideast #data #unitednations #un #ocha

The gaps between fatality figures from the #Gaza Ministry of Health and the Government Media Office—both Hamas-run institutions—continue. Researcher Gabriel Epstein explains why #journalists, #analysts, and #government officials need to be aware of these discrepancies. Today, #CENTCOM began to deliver aid from the temporary pier on the beach of #Gaza. In April, Andrew Clemmensen explained that while #maritime options for #aid delivery include challenges with shoreline distributions and development time, directly delivering aid to Gaza by sea would bring much more meaningful quantities of aid than airdrops. #middleeast #mideast #humanitarianaid #humanitarianassistance

#UNRWA has long weathered criticism over its anti-Semitic and objectionable material in textbooks, its overbroad definition of #Palestinian refugee status, and the political advocacy by the agency's staff. But the aftermath of Hamas’s October 7 attack against #Israel has cast the organization in an even harsher light. In this report, former UNRWA legal advisor and general counsel James G. Lindsay examines the problems facing the agency, and offers recommendations for reforms.

Today, U.S. deterrence is crucial not only to prevent a Hezbollah-#Israel war, but also to facilitate an effective ceasefire deal along the Israel-#Lebanon border, writes Institute expert Hanin Ghaddar. To do this, #Washington should focus on several goals: ⚫ Avoid offering political/economic compromises to Hezbollah and the many Lebanese state institutions it essentially controls. Clearly state that no U.S.-backed economic bailout will be forthcoming if the group escalates. ⚫Increase pressure on all the pillars of Hezbollah’s power in #Lebanon, including its military arsenal, its domestic political allies, and its hold over the Shia Muslim community. ⚫Coordinate public pressure and statements with #European and #Arab partners. ⚫Maintain the heightened U.S. military presence in the region and conduct joint exercises with partner forces. ⚫Repeat President Biden’s “Don’t” warning from April even more loudly and clearly.

#Turkish-#Israeli ties are complicated, particularly with respect to the #Palestinian conflict. Previously, Turkish leaders walked a fine line in their approach to Israel’s military campaign against Hamas, but the recent #trade boycott suggests a hardening of its #policy, writes Institute expert Soner Cagaptay. While the latest rift is more than rhetorical, #Ankara is unlikely to sever ties completely. #middleeast #mideast #gaza #economy #erdogan #potus #biden #netanyahu

#Iran’s decision to launch a direct, state-on-state attack against #Israel on April 13 increased the risk of overt conventional conflict in the #MiddleEast. This attack was significant in scope, scale, and complexity. Equally significant was the U.S.-organized effort to defeat Iran’s attack, working with Israel as well as #European and #Arab allies. Although not publicly claimed, the April 19 Israeli response targeted #airdefenses protecting Iran’s #nuclear program deep inside the country, without damage to civilian #infrastructure or civilian casualties. The region has now crossed the threshold for state-on-state attacks, with Israel and Iran both displaying potent capabilities and resolve. This series by Washington Institute experts sheds light on the opportunities and risks of the post-April 13 strategic environment: https://lnkd.in/dmxkc7Jv

Bashar al-Assad will be attending the #ArabLeague summit in #Bahrain this week, nearly a year after #Syria was readmitted to the organization. Yet a quick look at the proceedings of the league’s Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee on Syria shows that Arab engagement with Assad failed to rehabilitate the regime, writes Institute expert Andrew Tabler. https:// #middleeast #mideast #saudiarabia #normalization #policy
