Iran poured scorn yesterday on an offer by President Trump to meet President Rouhani in an attempt to cut a new deal between the countries.

Mr Rouhani’s interior minister, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, said that there would not be a positive response to any invitation. “America is not trustworthy,” he said. “After it arrogantly and unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear agreement, how can it be trusted?”

Other officials said that such a meeting would be a “humiliation”. Javad Zarif, the foreign minister, said: “Threats, sanctions & PR stunts won’t work.”
